Healthcare symposium highlights free services, hope for more collaboration between nonprofits

90% of Georgia’s counties are considered healthcare deserts, including Athens-Clarke. In these areas, health needs go unmet because of a lack of access to healthcare providers and facilities. WUGA’s Emma Auer brings us this story from a local healthcare symposium that gathered nonprofits together to discuss improving healthcare access, both now and in the long run.

Athens Film Festival to feature best of 3,000 submissions 

The Athens Film Festival will come back for its second year from Thursday, August 15th to Sunday, August 18th. It promises a packed lineup, from the first-ever full-length feature produced at Athena studios on Athens’ east side to a panel on AI in the film industry. Blaire Mars is an aspiring local filmmaker and the public relations assistant for the festival. She sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss what festival goers can expect. Great Southeast Pollinator Census expands to Alabama, invites citizen scientists

On August 22nd and 23rd, the Great Southeast Pollinator Census will invite citizen scientists of all ages to join the count. Becky Griffin founded the census seven years ago and will hold a webinar Tuesday, August 12th to share how participants can contribute to protecting the ecosystems of the Southeast United States. She sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss the census and how it has grown since 2018. Here’s that conversation.

UGA Performing Arts Center will welcome Yo-Yo Ma for 30th Anniversary Gala

This year, the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center will celebrate its 30th anniversary. Nearly 40 artists will join the lineup, including acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Jeffrey Martin is the director of the UGA Performing Arts Center, and sat down with WUGA’s Alexia Ridley to discuss the milestone and the center’s upcoming season. Here’s that conversation.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
