Athens News Matters: August 16th, 2025

From business owner to voting commissioner, community weighs in on UGA President’s House redevelopment

An iconic Athens antebellum home is at risk for demolition—at least, that’s what preservationists are saying about the University of Georgia’s President’s House. But—a developer has promised to preserve it…by putting a hotel in its backyard. WUGA’s Emma Auer brings us this story about how efforts to preserve one of Athens’ massive historic homes are clashing with skeptical neighbors.

Georgia family to premiere documentary about healing wounds of racism

Macon native Gwendolyn Payton waited 50 years for Mercer University to give her the art degree she earned during the first years of racial integration in the United States. The story of how she healed from this traumatic experience of racism is told in a new documentary called The Faith of the Dreamer. The film was directed by her son Khary Payton, known for his acting role in the television series The Walking Dead.

The Faith of the Dreamer will premiere at the Macon Film Festival on Sunday, August 24th. WUGA’s Alexia Ridley sat down with Gwendolyn and Khary Payton to discuss the film and how they believe it connects to the current political moment in the United States. Here’s that conversation.

Athens Pride and Queer Collective welcomes new executive director

The Athens Pride and Queer Collective has never had a paid employee—until about two months ago. Elliot Williamson is both APQC’s first-ever staff member and executive director.

WUGA’s Alexia Ridley sat down with him to discuss this new era in the organization’s development—and the moments in history that most inspire his advocacy on behalf of other LGBTQIA+ Athenians. Here’s that conversation.

Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish.
