Today on Athens News Matters, a nonprofit leader discusses a new effort to protect Northeast Georgia’s Middle Oconee River. Plus, a tribute to a UGA professor who left a mark on the way communities manage wildlife.
Oconee River Land Trust launches conservation of Middle Oconee River
The Middle Oconee River flows north to south through Clarke County, where it’s crossed by the 10 Loop and Atlanta Highway. The Oconee River Land Trust is a Northeast Georgia nonprofit that seeks to conserve undeveloped natural areas, and it recently launched a new campaign to conserve land around this river.
Dan Crescenzo is the organization’s Executive Director, and he met WUGA’s Emma Auer on the bank of the Middle Oconee to discuss this waterway—and why he and his colleagues are seeking to conserve it.
Remembering an Athenian who changed how humans manage wildlife
Michael Conroy was an Athenian beloved by many. He retired in 2019 as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, where he made a significant contribution to the field of wildlife management. He passed away in June.
Clint Moore is a retired federal scientist for the US Geological Survey. He was one of Dr. Conroy’s students and organized a symposium in his honor in September. Dr. Moore sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss the legacy of this remarkable Athenian.
