Athens News Matters: May 16th, 2026

Today on Athens News Matters, reviewing the TSPLOST referendum on this month’s ballot. Then, the Classic City Band will take movie soundtracks to New York City.

Reviewing the TSPLOST choice on the primary ballot

Voters will decide this Spring whether Athens-Clarke County will have the option to levy a new Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or TSPLOST. Alex Sams is a local realtor and the Chair of the TSPLOST 2026 Advisory Committee.

That committee chose the projects that the special tax will fund if approved. Sams sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss what exactly voters will be deciding when they cast their ballot this month.

Classic City Band to bring Athenians to Carnegie Hall

The composer John Williams is behind some of the most recognizable movie scores of the 20th century, from Indiana Jones to Star Wars. The Classic City Band will play a selection of Williams’ music, from early classics to later pieces, at a performance later this summer. This community band won’t be playing in Athens, however. They’ll be gracing one of America’s most famous stages on June 28th: Carnegie Hall in New York City.

WUGA’s Emma Auer visited their latest rehearsal and spoke with the band’s director Michael Brewer, as well as its President, Davis Clark, about this milestone.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
