Athens News Matters: October 17th, 2026

This week on Athens News Matters, the ghosts of the Eagle Tavern Museum. Plus, we break down the ballot for the midterm elections.

What’s on the ballot for the November 3rd election?

Early voting is underway for the November 3rd midterm elections, and will end on Friday, October 30th. To discuss the ballot, WUGA’s Havivah Saltz sat down with Charles Bullock, Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia.

What to expect from this year’s strong El Nino

There’s been a lot of buzz about the unusual strength of this year’s El Nino. The Director of the UGA Weather Network, Pam Knox, met with WUGA’s Havivah Saltz to go over what we can expect from the weather in our area.

The ghosts of the Eagle Tavern Museum

The Eagle Tavern Museum in Watkinsville is famously one of the most haunted locations in our listening area. Joann Hubert, the Museum and Historic Tourism Coordinator for Oconee

County, and her friend Paul Johns, founder of Northeast Georgia Paranormal, gave WUGA’s Havivah Saltz a tour of the tavern and its ghosts.

This is the second installment of Ghost Gabs, a series of Athens ghost stories. If you have a story you’d like to tell, email havivahsaltz@uga.edu.

Havivah Saltz has been with WUGA since 2023 as an on-air host and the producer for African Perspectives. She got her start in radio on WOBC FM at Oberlin College (class of ‘23), and she’s also worked as an on-air host on Athens' Power 100.1 and Magic 102.1. She is currently the interim producer of Athens News Matters. Outside of work, you can find Havivah making art, writing fiction, practicing Japanese, petting her very round cat, and watching concerning amounts of TV.
