Museum Minute: Student Association Pop-Up Art Market

Every spring, the museum’s student association puts together a pop-up artists’ market. Started seven years ago, the market is held at Stan Mullins’ studio on Pulaski Street, just a few blocks from downtown Athens. Artists can sign up for 10 by 10-foot booths at which to display and sell their work at no cost to them, and they don’t have to be students or affiliated with UGA. Recent years have included musical performances, too.

Mullins, a local sculptor and painter, donates the use of his space, a former cottonseed oil refinery. He’s been working with the museum in one way or another for decades and makes work in bronze, marble and granite as well as anything else he feels like experimenting with. You can see his sculpture of former UGA football coach Vince Dooley, being carried on the shoulders of his players, on the UGA campus at Lumpkin and Pinecrest streets.

This year’s artists’ market will take place on April 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, and is a great chance to pick up works by local artists to add some color to your walls. Vendor applications are now closed, but they’ll open up next year. The student association, which has been going strong since 2011, also plans three student nights a year, which provide fun, art-related activities at no cost, and is funded by UGA’s Parents Leadership Council. You can check out the student association on Instagram.
