Legacy: Vince Dooley, 1932-2022

As hundreds of thousands of Georgia Bulldog fans pour into Sanford Stadium this fall, the UGA Special Collections Libraries are featuring an exhibit focusing on the life and legacy of late UGA football coach Vince Dooley, who led the team to win six SEC Championships and the 1980 National Championship.

While football fans may think they know the story of the beloved coach, who died last year, the exhibit “Legacy: Vince Dooley, 1932 to 2022” goes beyond the wins and losses, delving into how Dooley shaped the team through memorable seasons and left his mark in Athens not only as athletic director but as a historian, a writer, a gardener and more.

Jason Hasty, the Hargrett Library’s UGA Athletics History Specialist, selected the photographs, newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia in the show that serve as a highlight reel for Georgia Bulldog fans. Each Friday before a home football game, at 3 p.m., Hasty provides an in-depth tour of Dooley’s early, prime and late life.

The Vince Dooley legacy exhibit will remain on display through May in the the Special Collections Libraries Building, which is located on the University of Georgia campus in Athens and is open to visitors for free from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, with extended evening hours until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A free tour with the curator is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Nov. 3.
