One question people always ask us is whether we show art by UGA students. The answer is mostly no because there’s an excellent resource for that right across the quad from us, at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. The Dodd Galleries, in five exhibition spaces on the first and third floors of the art school, present a rotating series of exhibitions by both established and emerging artists, UGA students and professionals. Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with free admission, the galleries focus on the idea of contemporary art as research.
Past exhibitions have featured work by artists Michi Meko, Paul Pfeiffer, Rosemary Mayer, Ry Rocklen, Dodd alum Zipporah Camille Thompson, as well many UGA art faculty members. Galleries director Katie Geha has curated many of the exhibitions, but guest curators including Atlanta’s Daniel Fuller and Erin Dunn of Telfair Museums in Savannah have also contributed to the schedule. The galleries also host the annual bachelor of fine arts exit shows for the art school and a yearly show focusing on the study abroad program in Cortona, Italy. Students and faculty can submit proposals for solo or group shows in any media including performance.
The Dodd Galleries mission is to challenge contemporary perceptions of artmaking and promote the idea that art is essential to the production of knowledge. As part of that, they also host a variety of events throughout the academic year, from lectures to openings to experimental art happenings. Visit art.uga.edu for more information.
