The Golden Age of Broadway is in the spotlight for an exhibit on display at the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries. The class-curated exhibit features posters from iconic musicals from the legendary New York City theater district.
The exhibit is the result of creative research by students under the guidance of George Contini, Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor in the UGA department of theater and film studies, as well as archivists Jan Hebbard and Mazie Bowen from the Special Collections Libraries.
The exhibit highlights some famed productions like “Cabaret,” “Hair” and “Kiss Me Kate” as well as lesser-known shows such as “Lost in the Stars” and “No Strings.” Also on display is a dress worn by acclaimed actress Angela Lansbury for the musical “Dear World,” alongside sketches for the costume created by designer Freddy Wittop.
The musical theater history class project is a product of the Special Collections Libraries Teaching Fellows program, which Contini joined in 2021. Since the program’s inception, UGA Special Collections Fellows have designed more than 75 courses across 40 disciplines, engaging thousands of students with the rich array of materials held in UGA’s three special collections libraries.
The Golden Age of Broadway exhibit will remain on display through mid-August in the Special Collections Libraries Building, which is located on the University of Georgia campus in Athens and is open to visitors for free on weekdays.
