Born in 1924, Dr. Louise McBee started her career as a high school teacher.
She came to the University of Georgia in 1963 as the Dean of Women and retired in 1988 as acting Vice President for Academic Affairs. McBee’s years as a UGA administrator were during a period of tremendous growth and change. Throughout that time, she worked tirelessly to expand the opportunities for women in higher education.
After retiring from UGA, Louise McBee served six terms in the Georgia House of Representatives. An eternal champion of education, she was able to ensure the financial stability of the HOPE scholarship, fortify teachers’ and university employees’ retirement and strengthen the school breakfast program for low-income students.
UGA’s Louise McBee Institute of Higher Education is named in her honor.
