Clarke Schools to require masks in most situations

Clarke County School District administrators say that masks will be required in most situations as the district gears up to return to classes on August 4th. In an update during last week’s Board of Education meeting, the district’s Executive Director of Student Support Services, Jillian Whatley, laid out the conditions under which masks will be required as the new school year gets underway. The Clarke County School Board recently named Interim Superintendent Dr. Xernona Thomas as the new superintendent for the district.  We asked Thomas her reaction to having both backing from the board and community support.

“Humbled, honestly is the word. This is not what I had ever expected to be my career path. My purpose is just to provide some consistency and continuity during a time of significant transition.”

Last night, the Clarke County Board of Education named Dr. Xernona Thomas as superintendent of the Clarke County School District.

Dr. Thomas has been serving as interim superintendent since November 2019 when she was appointed to replace former superintendent Demond Means.

Interim Clarke County Superintendent, Dr. Xernona Thomas has tested positive for COVID-19. Dr. Thomas was hospitalized for her symptoms. According to an email from Communications Manager Beth Moore, the district cannot provide personal information of staff, however, Dr. Thomas decided to publicly share her results. She is currently resting comfortably at home.
