Athens-Clarke County Library to Host Film Screening and Discussion

Athens Regional Library

The Athens-Clarke County Library will host a free film screening and discussion of the documentary, Harvest of Empire, on Tuesday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m.

Paul Duncan, Associate Director of UGA's Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute, will introduce the film and moderate the discussion.

Based on the groundbreaking book by award-winning journalist and Democracy Now! co-host Juan González, this documentary takes an unflinching look at the role that U.S. economic and military interests played in triggering an unprecedented wave of migration that is transforming our nation’s cultural and economic landscape.

The film features present day immigrant stories, rarely seen archival material, as well as interviews with such figures as Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Rigoberta Menchú, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Junot Díaz, Mexican historian Dr. Lorenzo Meyer, journalists María Hinojosa and Geraldo Rivera, Grammy award-winning singer Luis Enrique, and poet Martín Espada.

Harvest of Empire is directed by Peter Getzels and Eduardo López and produced by Wendy Thompson-Marquez and Eduardo López. The 90-minute film is unrated.

The event will take place in the library’s Appleton Auditorium. For information, call (706) 613-3650. The library is located at 2025 Baxter Street, Athens.
