ACC Changes Starting July 1st

July 1st will see some changes at the Athens-Clarke government. A newly created Sustainability Office will launch Saturday. It’s dedicated to enhancing Athens-Clarke County’s commitment to conserve resources, grow the economy, and foster an environment where all citizens have the opportunity to prosper. The main mission of the office is to promote innovative practices and policies to reduce the Unified Government’s environmental footprint.

Former Environmental Coordinator, Andrew Saunders, will head the office as the Sustainability Officer. Mike Wharton, who formerly served as the Operations Administrator for the Leisure Service Department, will serve as the Ecological Resource Manager for the Sustainability Office.

Changes to the scholarship program for Leisure Services are also going into effect on the first, those changes include the elimination of full scholarships for youth programs. In March, the Mayor and Commissioners voted to modify the program that provides discounts for those programs for residents who qualify.

The changes include revised scholarship levels of 25%, 50%, and 75% only. In addition, a $400 annual cap per child is now in effect. The final change requires a recent utility bill and IRS Form 1040 as documentation, in addition to a photo ID. Programs paid for before July 1st are still covered under the previous plan.
