Thousands of pounds of supplies carried by a caravan of tractor-trailers and escorted by Oconee County deputies are reaching flood-ravaged victims of Hurricane Harvey. Six Oconee County deputies remain in Texas helping to hand out some of the more than 200,000 pounds of items collected. Chief Deputy Lee Weems says the response from the community was impressive.
“We are overwhelmed by the public participation in this effort,” Weems said. “We knew that one truck was going to be a snap and we really probably thought we would get two, we were overwhelmed by the response that we got. Three trucks have already gone to Texas and there’s still more in the warehouse, at least two more trucks worth of goods, maybe three.”
Weems says those goods will still be distributed. They are just waiting to see if deputies will be heading back to Texas, or if the supplies are needed for victims of Hurricane Irma. Oconee deputies are hand-delivering those relief supplies to those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
