Winter Weather Results in Road Hazards, Closures

The University of Georgia Police Department is urging drivers to state off the roads. The department issued a weather safety advisory due to precipitation already on the ground and temperatures not expected to exceed freezing, weather conditions in the area are expected to deteriorate over the course of the day.

Dangerous road conditions are already being reported in Athens-Clarke and surrounding counties.  Roadways and sidewalks on and around campus are likely to become slick, causing vehicle and pedestrian travel to become more dangerous as the day goes on.  Everyone is strongly urged to remain indoors and avoid any travel unless absolutely necessary.

As a result of up to two inches of snow in north Georgia, the Georgia DOT crews are treating and plowing interstates and state routes across the state. The department warns of multiple icy spots on the roads and encourages drivers to stay off roads as a result of the dangerous conditions.

UGA is closed today, as is the Athens-Clarke county library and local schools.  along with the ACC government offices and worskstations are closed for all non-essential personnel.  State offices are also closed today and Governor Deal has extended the closure for tomorrow as well for all non-essential personnel. The governor issued State of Emergency Tuesday for 83 counties due to the winter weather. Those counties include Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe.
