Democratic legislators held a walkout at the Capitol Wednesday in support of student walkouts around the nation.

Democratic lawmakers from both the House and Senate held a press conference Wednesday to support school walkouts around the state and nation.

District 117 Representative Deborah Gonzalez was among those taking part. She says she was inspired by the students.

“Our message to them was that they’re not alone and that we support what they’re doing,” Gonzalez said. “In fact, we are so proud of them, you know I read a little snippet about 6th graders who not only organized their own walkout, but had press kits for the media that had created. I mean they have really taken the lead.”

The walkout lasted 17 minutes, from 10 o' clock to 10:17 in response to the Parkland, Florida school shooting. Photos of each of the victims killed were held up. The victims' names and ages were read aloud.

Gonzalez says the walkout was also meant to draw attention the lack of legislation for what she called sensible gun safety laws.
