Authorities Investigating Death of Inmate in Clarke County Jail

Clarke County Sheriff's Office

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at the Athens-Clarke County Jail. According to a media release, Derek Meyer was found unresponsive in his cell shortly after 12 pm on Sunday, July 29th.

According to Captain Hayden Hodges, there were no apparent signs of foul play and the cause of death is pending results of an autopsy at the GBI State Crime Lab.

“Out of respect for the ongoing investigations and the Meyer family, we will wait on the final conclusions before releasing additional information,” Hodges said.

The 28-year old Meyer was booked into the jail on May 11 of this year on sexual assault charges involving a minor. At the time of the incident, he was being housed in a single cell.

Jail security and medical staff provided treatment until EMS arrived. Meyer was taken to Piedmont Athens-Regional Medical Center where he was placed on life support until his death on Tuesday evening.

Both the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI are investigating the death.
