UGA Research Trial Finds Surprising Solution for High Cholesterol

Researchers conducted a five-day feeding trial of 15 healthy young men. Participants ate high-fat diets enriched with either cottonseed or olive oil.

Those in the cottonseed trial showed significant reductions in cholesterol and triglycerides compared to minimal changes on the olive oil-enriched diet.

Dr. Jamie Cooper says they want to expand the pool of participants.

“We actually are doing that right now. We just started a study on that, so if anyone has high cholesterol and they’re not taking medication, please contact us because we’re looking for participants right now actually. People walking around with healthy cholesterol profiles don’t really need to worry that much about improving them. It’s the people who are at high risk for that.”

This diet also increased high-density lipoproteins, or HDL (the “good” cholesterol) by 8 percent.

Interested men and women between 50 to 75 with high cholesterol, but are not taking cholesterol lowering medication, can contact Alexis Marquardt, at arm37769@uga.edu or call her at (678)-860-0434.
