Red Cross Seeking Platelet Donations to Help Cancer Patients

The Red Cross is asking eligible donors to help patients fight cancer by giving donations of platelets or blood. About 2 million units of platelets are transfused each year in the U.S., and more than half of all donated platelets go to cancer patients. Ronnika McFall is with Red Cross communications. She says the need is constant.

“Platelets are tiny cells that form clots and stop bleeding,” McFall explained. “For millions of Americans, they are essential for surviving in fighting cancer, chronic diseases and traumatic injuries. Because they must be transfused within five days of donations, donations are always needed.”

McFall says some donors find the process easier than regular blood donations.

“Some donors find platelet donations to be more comfortable than traditional whole blood donations because a smaller needle is used. Doors get fluids and red after donating platelets so some donors say they feel less sluggish afterward.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 1.7 million new cancer cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year.

To schedule at blood donation appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The organization is also interested in individuals or groups willing to sponsor a blood drive.
