National Weather Service: Flash Flood Warning in Effect for Athens, Surrounding Areas

National Weather Service

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood warning for Jackson County, and parts of Clarke, Barrow, and Madison counties until 7:30 Friday evening. Much of North and Central Georgia is under a hazardous weather outlook. Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms will remain possible across portions of Georgia through this afternoon.

The greatest potential for any severe thunderstorms will be east of a line from Athens to Milledgeville to Abbeville. The main hazard will be damaging winds, frequent lighting and localized flooding. A tornado warning for Athens-Clarke County expired this morning.

Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated that rainfall accumulations up to 3 inches have occurred resulting in flooding. Despite much of the heavy rain shifting east, elevated water levels will continue. Roads have been washed out in some instances and creeks are out of their beds.
