The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is investigating a pair of armed robberies in Athens.
Officers responded to a call at 7:17 a.m. on South Milledge Avenue near Milledge Place and the 10 Loop, according to a university statement.
While responding to the first call, ACCPD received a second call of an armed robbery in the same area.
An unidentified 22-year-old male UGA student was shot by an individual, and he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
In a press conference with the media, ACCPD Police Chief Cleveland Spruill offered further details about the morning's events.
The first victim, also a student at UGA, was approached by the suspect in a parking lot at the Milledge Place apartment complex. That student was not injured.
The suspect then confronted the second victim at a bus stop outside of Milledge Place, where he shot the victim multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Officers were responding to the wounded victim when they received the call about the first victim.
Chief Spruill urges the community to call ACCPD if they see anything suspicious.
"We'd rather be called and not needed than needed and not called," he said, and he urged the community to "be vigilant."
Chief Spruill did not release any further comments about the extent of the wounded student's injuries, what was taken from the students or the students' identities.
In an e-mail sent to parents and students, UGA stated that UGA PD, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Georgia State Patrol are assisting in the investigation.
According to ACCPD Public Information Officer Geoffrey Gilland, the suspect is a black male with dreads and twists who is driving an early 2000 Ford Mustang convertible that is white with a tan convertible roof. A sketch artist is actively working with witnesses to create a sketch of the suspect.
