Athens Area Humane Society Hosts Mardi Paws

Animal lovers and others are converging on the State Botanical Garden for The Athens Area Humane Society’s annual gala this weekend.

This year’s theme for the yearly fundraiser is Mardi Paws. The Athens Area Humane Society is a no-kill facility which rescues animals from area animal control facilities in addition to strays. Executive Director Jane Stewart says they are in desperate need of more space for the variety of services the shelter provides.

“Of course, we do adoptions, we’re open seven days a week and vaccinate, and spay or neuter all of the animals that come through our program,” Stewart said. “Our low-cost surgical center operates Monday through Thursday. We not only do cats and dogs, owned animals, but we also do the surgeries for a lot of feral cats that come in.”

The facility also performs surgeries for area rescues and shelters, provides educational information to area children and hosts summer camps.

Cronweld Leon is the social media and event coordinator for the organization.

“For the spay and neuter center, they’re the ones that I think deserve the highlight from the Humane Society,” according to Leon.” They alone have spayed or neutered over 5,000 pets just this last year.”

The gala is Saturday May 11th at 7 pm at the State Botanical Garden on Milledge Avenue. Last year’s theme was the Great Catsby. For more information or tickets, visit the Athens Humane Society website.
