Hot Corner Mural Back on Track

Athens Cultural Affairs Commission

The Hot Corner mural is back on. Just days after receiving a complaint from a property owner next to the Morton Theatre, work on the Athens Legacy Mural is underway. Mayor Kelly Girtz says a solution has been reached.

Fortunately, as of earlier this afternoon, everything has been resolved with the Hot Corner mural,” according to Girtz. “It appears that it is going to be in an alternate location, but is going to be painted so I’m excited that it’s moving forward. My hope is that the unveiling is not delayed, but if it is, it will be by a matter of days.”

Girtz says that instead of being painted on the Morton Theatre, the mural will now have a moveable home.

“It appears that at least initially, it’s not going to be hung at the Morton Theatre. It now seems that it’s going to be on a series of moveable panels, and initially may be hanging on a municipal building just a block away.’

The plan came about as a result of a collaboration between all parties involved.

“Things are back on absolutely, the artist is engaged, the Cultural Affairs Commission has stuck in there the entire time, Athens-Clarke County staff and commission really stepped up to the plate to make this happen. So we all hit bumps in the road once in a while and that’s bound to happen. What you have to do is just roll with it and invariably if you hang on, good things will come.

Miami-based artist Elio Mercado has been selected to paint the mural. He was chosen from a pool of over 40 applicants.

Mercado will be working with local artist Broderick Flanigan, who will serve as a liaison between Mercado and community stakeholders.
