Name Released in ACCPD Shooting

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI)continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting that took place on Monday afternoon in Athens. The incident, which involved multiple Athens-Clarke County police officers, left the subject dead.

According to the GBI, officers were called to the River Club Apartments on Macon Highway around 12:45 in the afternoon on Monday. Aaron Hong, 23, was reported to be wielding a knife aggressively and appeared to be covered in blood. When police made contact with Hong, he reportedly approached them with the knife. Officers asked Hong to drop the knife repeatedly, but Hong charged one of the officers with the knife. He was then shot by a police officer.

Hong managed to stand up and attempted to grab one of the officer’s weapons. At this point, according to authorities, another officer shot at and struck Hong again. Medics on the scene attempted to treat and revive Hong, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. One ACCPD officer received minor injuries during the altercation, and was treated on the scene.
