Oconee County Teen Dies from Injuries after 'Attack'

The 19-year old victim involved in an incident early Wednesday morning has died as a result of his injuries.

Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry says Joseph Kenall Jackson sustained the injuries in an apparent attack outside his home near the intersection of Whippoorwill Road and Cumberland Drive. The sheriff’s office is investigating this case as a murder.

Chief Deputy Lee Weems says deputies received a 911 call shortly after midnight Wednesday stating that Jackson returned home with significant injuries.

“It came in as a medical call for a 19-year old who had left his house on foot earlier and he returned and he was covered in blood,” according to Weems. “And that’s how the call came in.”

He was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital where he remained until his death.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Thursday at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur.

Weems says investigators are still seeking any witnesses or anyone with information about vehicles that have unexplained side window damage. Deputies found a large amount of window safety glass at the scene.

“If you know someone who is suddenly missing a window from their vehicle or has damage to a window or windshield, please contact the Oconee County Sheriff’s office.”

Contact investigator Justin Cash at 706-769-3945 or jcash@oconeesheriff.org.

“We would like to be able to let this young man’s family know what happened,” Weems said.
