Hot Corner to Hold Official Unveiling of “Hot Corner: An Athens Legacy” Mural

Members of the Athens community are invited to a celebration of the Hot Corner Mural Wednesday.

The new mural titled “Hot Corner: An Athens Legacy” was created by Miami-based artist Elio Mercado, who was selected from more than 40 submissions.

Athens Artist Broderick Flanigan helped to create the mural.

“I just want people to be able to come out, we plan to have a couple of vendors at the unveiling, it’ll be right there in front of the mural in the parking lot that’s owned by Athens-Clarke County,” Flanigan said.

“I just want people to come out and celebrate this momentous and joyous occasion.”

The artists spent three weeks in June bringing the vision to life. Flanigan says the project draws attention to a sometimes less-visible segment of Athens.

“This piece of art is a grand display of that, kind of highlighting and showcasing that we have this African-American business sector that is in Athens, that exists in Athens and that wants and needs support.

But also for some of the African-Americans in Athens to see a representation of themselves in the community in a space like downtown is huge.” some of the

funding was provided by the Athens Cultural Affair Commission with matching funds from an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The mural is located on Washington and Lumpkin Streets in Downtown Athens. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony take place at 5:30 Wednesday evening.
