Hurricane Dorian-Georgia Preps/Services for Evacuees

Hurricane Dorian has weakened to a Category 2 storm. as it continues to batter the Bahamas with life-threatening storm surge.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Dorian's maximum sustained winds decreased Tuesday morning to near 110 mph (175 kph). But it's expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next few days.

Dorian is centered about 45 miles (70 kilometers) north of Freeport in the Bahamas and is moving northwest near 2 mph (4 kph).

Gov. Brian Kemp has issued a mandatory evacuation order for multiple Georgia counties that could be affected by the dangerous storm. As a result, several Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) offices will be closed today and will remain closed until further notice due to potential inclement weather from Hurricane Dorian. All four closed centers are impacted by this order.

Staff and GDOL customers will be updated as the situation changes. All other GDOL career centers will operate according to their normal schedules, pending weather conditions and notification of a change in status. 

As Hurricane Dorian gets closer to Florida, U.S. Geological Survey scientists have been in the field from Savannah, Georgia to Hollywood, Florida, covering more than 450 miles. They’ve been deploying 214 storm-tide sensors and17 other instruments that will track the hurricane’s effects as it comes ashore.

The Southern Region of the USDA Forest Service, including the Chattahooche-Oconee National Forests, is waiving fees and making campgrounds available for people displaced by Hurricane Dorian.

Atlanta is welcoming Hurricane Dorian evacuees with open arms, camping spaces and America's favorite pastime.

Atlanta Motor Speedway and the Atlanta Braves are offering free services to residents from mandatory evacuation areas throughout Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

The Speedway can handle thousands of campers and is offering free spaces to dry RVs and tent campers. They're also offering limited spaces with water, power and sewer for $20 per night.

The Major League Baseball team is giving out complimentary tickets to games Tuesday and Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays and the Washington Nationals. Evacuees must show valid I.D. at ticket counters while supplies last.

Airbnbs in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas are also extending a helping hand by offering free housing to evacuees.
