September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the American Cross is asking donors to give blood to support children, teens and young adults battling cancer, as well as others in need of transfusions.
Ronnika McFall with Red Cross Communications tells us about the need.
“According to the national Cancer Institute, more than 15,000 kids and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year,” McFall said. “And cancer treatment can put patients at risk of low red blood cells and platelet counts. So that’s why it’s very important that the Red Cross collects more than 13,000 blood donations every day.”
Only three of every 100 people in the U.S. give blood. She says it’s easier than ever to make an appointment to give.
“You can actually call 1-800- Red Cross or you can enable the blood donor skill on your Alexa Echo device. You also can download the Red Cross Blood Donor App and you can blood drives based on your zip code on there, you can also just visit the website redcrossblood.org, it’s a very simple process. “It only takes a pinch to save up to three lives.”
McFall says types O and B blood types in critical need right now.
