The Friends of the Georgia Museum of Natural History hosting the group’s 20th annual fund-raising gala in October, but organizers say the deadline for tickets is Friday, September 20th.

John Wares, professor in UGA’s Department of Genetics and Odom School of Ecology, is president of the Friends.

He says the event kicks off with Cocktails and a silent auction followed by a catered dinner.

“It typically brings in close to half of what we strive to donate to the general fund of the Museum of Natural History every year,” according to Wares.

“To support everything from buying curation cabinets for insects to the chemicals and reagents that we need to store fish or salamanders in.”

Duke University Professor Dr. Rytas Vilgalys is this year’s speaker; with the unofficial theme this year being mushrooms.

The gala takes place October 4 from 6 to 10 pm at the State Botanical Garden.

“The celebration is both our chance to get together, to dress up, to have a good time and most importantly, to try to raise money towards supporting the Museum of Natural History and its activities, its outreach, its needs.”

The museum is a bit of a hidden gem on campus.

It has everything from massive whale skeletons, an exhibit on carnivore diversity, coral displays, a comparative collection of cockroaches and more.

For tickets visit the museum’s website or  www.gmnhfriends.org.
