Dine Out For Kids 2019, FC-CIS

Athenians are encouraged to eat out and show support for area children today. A dozen restaurants are partnering with Family Connection-Communities in Schools by hosting Dine Out For Kids.

A portion of the proceeds with benefit the Athens nonprofit. Tim Johnson is Executive Director at the organization.

“Family Connection-Communities in Schools brings the community together to do whatever it takes to have success for all children in Athens.”

Johnson says Family-Connection-Communities in Schools has made a real difference in efforts to improve the outcomes for area youth.

“Well, through the clever work involving a lot of agencies that we’re coordinating, we’ve had an 80% reduction in teen pregnancy in Clarke county, our high school graduation rate has gone from 50% to over 80%, and much stronger health and childcare services are being provided,” according to Johnson. “There’s been an increase from three quality-rated childcare centers in Clarke County to about 15.”

The nonprofit has been in Athens since 1991. It works with more than 100 organizational partners

Johnson says more than 50 projects have been initiated to help improve results for children and youth.

“That includes our site coordinator work in the schools, our Bridge to Employment Program at Cedar Shoals High School, our neighborhood leaders work throughout the community.”
