Piedmont's Loran Smith Center Partners with Athens YMCA for Wellness Training

Piedmont Athens Regional

Piedmont Athens Regional is partnering with Athens YWCA to offer a new Wellness Training program. The new program provides wellness and fitness counseling to cancer patients at the hospital’s Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.

Oncology Nurse Navigator Sandy Pyle says the program are tailored to the patients’ needs.

“We started this current program of providing vouchers for some of our clients that allows them to go to the Y and have exposure to some of the different exercise classes and programs,” Pyle said.

Pyle says recent research shows the benefits cancer patients experience by exercising.

“The medication can often have big impact on bone health, so making sure that strength training is incorporated into the exercise along with cardiovascular training. And especially for cancer patients, people going through treatment, the importance of keeping moving during treatment.”

The Loran Smith Center provides free medical services, programs, therapies and counseling for anyone affected by cancer at any phase in their cancer journey.

“We provide cancer support service to anyone in the community touched by cancer, everything we do is evidence-based, that it helps people through their treatments into recovery and beyond; and their caregivers.

Patients do not have to be based at Piedmont Athens to receive treatment. Patients work with training nurse April Dorsett.
