Georgia Lawmakers Grant Powers to Governor to Fight Virus

Georgia's lawmakers are granting Gov. Brian Kemp broad powers to combat the state spread of the new coronavirus. Members of the General Assembly met in a special session Monday necessitated by Kemp's move Saturday to declare a public health emergency.

They compromised on a plan to let Kemp extend his powers past April 13. Lawmakers set a plan to return in mid-April, when they could vote to revoke Kemp's powers. Also Monday, Kemp called for assisted living and nursing homes to restrict visitors and communal dining and state Superintendent Richard Woods suspended standardized testing for Georgia's public school students.
