ACC Commissioner on Coronavirus and Athens

Athens-Clarke County Government

There’s another presumptive case of COVID-19 in Athens according to District 7 Commissioner Russell Edwards.

“They transferred that person to a local hospital today, you know this situation is constantly evolving.

During an emergency meeting Monday night, the ACC Mayor Commission passed a ban restricting the number of people allowed at certain in Athens-Clarke County. The measure, among other items, could up for discussion again in a meeting this evening. Edwards explains the decision.

“We voted to prohibit gatherings of 10 or more individuals in places that serve alcoholic beverages and beverages, place that serve food and places that provide entertainment service,” according to Edwards.

They also passed a voluntary measure aimed keeping Athenians inside as much as possible.

“For citizens to shelter-in-place 24 hours a day. So sheltering in place means you stay in your home, isolated, with your family, and you only leave for essential errands, such as to and from work.”

Edwards says he’d like to avoid the worst-case scenarios found in other places around the globe.

“The situation in Italy and France where those countries, especially Italy, took a lackadaisical approach and did not issue any sort of mandate until it was too late,” Edwards said. “Now in Italy, there’s more patients than there are hospitals beds, there’s more patients that there are ventilators and so doctors are having to make the horrific choice of who lives and who dies that’s exactly what we’re trying to prevent in Athens, Georgia.”

Edwards would like to see more testing implemented in Athens and the rest of the U.S.
