Georgia Department of Public Health

The Georgia Department of Public Health says there are now more than four thousand cases of coronavirus infections in Georgia. The latest numbers show a total of 4,117 cases with 125 deaths and 885 people hospitalized.

Local figures show Athens-Clarke County has 51 confirmed cases with five deaths. Barrow County has 19 cases and two deaths, Oconee County has 16 cases, no deaths, Jackson County has eight cases, no deaths, Madison county three cases with one death and Oglethorpe County has its first case.

More than 16-thousand tests have been performed in Georgia, with commercial labs testing 14,260 people to find 3,791 positives and the GPHL testing 1,921 to discover 326 positive cases.

The largest number of cases, 58%, are in people aged 18 to 59, followed by those 60 and older who comprise 35% of the case. Just one percent of the cases is in those 17 and younger, while the age is unknown in six percent of cases. The Georgia Department of Public Health updates the numbers twice daily, at noon and 7 pm at its COVID-19 Daily Status Report.

The numbers are expected to increase in the days ahead as testing efforts Georgia ramp up to more than 3,000 a test. The increase comes after a partnership with the state, Georgia’s public colleges and universities, Emory University and others.
