Severe Weather Expected in Athens, North Georgia

Athens is under a hazardous weather outlook. According to the National Weather Service, isolated thunderstorms are possible late tonight over North Georgia. The main hazards will be occasional lightning and heavy rain. Forecasters say strong to severe thunderstorms are likely across North and Central Georgia Thursday, with multiple rounds of storms through the area.

Any storms that develop could have the potential to create strong, damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, large hail over an inch in diameter and tornadoes; some with the potential of becoming long-track tornadoes.

One to 2 ½ inches of rain are forecast for the area, with locally higher amounts possible. That brings the threat of isolated flash flooding. Athens-Clarke County, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe counties are included in the advisory.
