EADC Holding Emergency Food Distibution

The East Athens Development Corporation is holding an emergency food distribution, Thursday, May 7th. Food will be given away from 10 am until 12 pm outside the Miriam Moore Community Service Center located at 410 McKinley Drive. Fred Smith is Executive Director of the organization.

“We have always for the last 15 years or so, offered a one-a-month food distribution, so we enhanced that to twice a month,” according to Smith. “And of course because of safety concerns we made some changes there as well, so we changed it to a drive-through distribution.”

Smith says the community need was already high before the coronavirus pandemic, and the situation has only gotten worse.

“Well, it’s more intense than I’ve ever seen. We service roughly 100 families every month and now we’re serving 300 families per month. That’s just the drive-through distribution that we do twice a month.”

Any Athenians in need of food can attend the no-contact distribution. Boxes of food ae placed inside vehicles’ trunks by volunteers. No appointment needed and distribution is first come, first served. Call the helpline at 706-208-0048 for more information.
