Oconee County Parents, Students to Protest School Reopening Plan

A group of Oconee County parents and students will be protesting the district’s plan to reopen. Those attending the event are meeting in front of the Oconee County School Board office at 34 School Street in Watkinsville.

The protest comes in response to a request from the school system that parents submit a commitment form by July 15th as part of county schools’ reopening. According to a release from event organizers, the reopening would require students to commit to nine weeks of either in-school or online classes without the option of hybrid classes. If the commitment form was not submitted, then students would be registered for in-school instruction. The group is also protesting that the system is not requiring students to wear masks.

A public Facebook group, Safety First-Reopening Schoolshas more than 900 members.

The protest is scheduled from 8 an until 9am Wednesday morning.
