Firefly Trail Benefit 5K Goes Virtual

Supporters of the Firefly Trail have an upcoming event scheduled for August.

Maxeys Model Mile 5K is going virtual. Registration is now open for runners, walkers and others to join the race. Mark Ralston is President of the Firefly Trail Inc. He explains how the virtual race works.

“Now not only can people get the exercise and possibly even get out on the trail, but they can do their participation in the race on a treadmill in their home or in their neighborhood or even walking the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail. They can be anywhere in the country and still participate,” he says.

John Kissane is the Trail Development Coordinator with Firefly Trail, which will run 39 miles from Athens to Union Point when completed.

“It will allow runners and walkers to participate in a different way and still feel that they’re supporting the Model Mile Maxeys. It’s happening across the country in different places, this type of approach. And I think because runners and walkers are kind of starved for the events they like to do, this comes about as a good alternative,” says Kissane.

The race will count toward participation in the Firefly Trail Race Series, the 2020 Black Bag Race Series and the 2020 Clover Glove Series. Proceeds benefit the Maxeys Firefly Trail Fund, which helps cover the cost of trail amenities like benches and picnic tables along the city’s stretch of the trial.
