Athens News Matters Special Edition Preview

WUGA

WUGA’s coverage of the 2020 election continues with the second of two special edition Athens News Matters programs airing this week. The three candidates competing in the race to replace former District Attorney Ken Mauldin discussed the issues and why they’re running.

The nonpartisan candidate and Assistant DA James Chafin is first.

“I want to keep our community safe, help it continue to thrive. I've been a lawyer for 21-years, I’ve been dedicated, for the past 14-years of my professional career, to the circuit as an Assistant District Attorney, and  I want to make sure that we are keeping our community safe, that we are being proactive, and that we’re treating people fairly.”

Next up we hear from Attorney Deborah Gonzalez.

“I served as the State Representative for the House District 117. I am a local attorney and community activist and have been out there in the community, for the past few years, really working on issues including criminal justice reform. I’ve seen the needs and the lack in gaps that we have in that system, currently.”

And finally, interim DA Brian Patterson.

“I’ve supervised an office of 18 prosecutors, I've tried over 100 felonies and misdemeanors to a jury verdict, and I've litigated over 150 appeals in our appellate courts. I love our community, and I’m committed to keeping it safe, and I'm also committed to making sure that the rule of law is fairly, justly and equally applied to all persons,”

You can hear more from the candidates in this week’s edition of Athens News Matters.

All three candidates answered the same questions which were submitted by WUGA listeners.
