UGA Sees Slight Increase in COVID-19 Cases

UGA saw a slight uptick in new cases of COVID-19 last week with 79 new cases being reported from October 26th to November 1st. This is the sixth week in a row of less than 100 new cases being reported. 

On-campus surveillance testing at Legion Field was up slightly, with just over 2100 test being administered. 33 positive cases were reported from surveillance testing, bringing the positivity rate to 1.56%. 25 of the new cases were reported from the on-campus surveillance testing. 22 of the 79 new cases were among faculty and staff. 

Prior to Thanksgiving, The University of Georgia is increasing the capacity of its surveillance testing program to 1,000 participants per day for the two-week period from November 9 – 20. 

Those who are tested during this period will receive new face coverings, as well as coupons for on-campus retail locations and the UGA Bookstore.

Even though classes will be moving online after the break, surveillance testing will remain open from November 30th to the end of the semester for those still in Athens. 

Statewide, Georgia is currently reporting more than 366-thousand cumulative cases of COVID-19 infections, about 9,000 cases higher than Friday the 30th, with the death toll at 8,072. Over 32,000 people have been hospitalized, with ICU admissions over 6,031. 

Athens-Clarke County has 5,917 cases of coronavirus infections and 50 deaths. Barrow County is reporting 2,718 cases and 52 deaths, Jackson has 2531 cases with 42 deaths, Madison County comes in with 832 cases and 11 deaths, Oconee County has 893 and 31 deaths, and Oglethorpe County has 439 cases with 13 deaths.
