Memorial Services Planned for UGA Student Slain Two Decades Ago

Classic City Crime Podcast

Family members, supporters, and others are taking part in a memorial service to mark the 20 years since a University of Georgia Law student, Tara Baker, was killed in her East Athens home. Cameron Jay is the host and producer of Classic City Crime, which follows that case.

"In honor of her life and celebrating the life that she led, we're having a memorial at the University of Georgia Law Library. We understand that this was the last place that Tara was seen alive. We're asking people to come by from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM to lay a flower at a memorial that will be standing with a photo and mention of Tara's story at the law library. The Baker family will be there at 11:30 AM, so anyone who wants to join them specifically can come at 11:30, and we ask them to wear masks."

Baker was murdered on January 19, 2001, the day before her 24th birthday and the case is still unsolved.

"Police responded to a fire at her home, and that fire revealed a brutal murder and attack that led to 20 years of unanswered questions and 20 years of someone not being held responsible. It was a violent murder. It was something that happened to someone who led a relatively low-risk lifestyle."

A virtual memorial service is also scheduled for 7:30 this evening on the Classic City Crime Podcast Facebook page.
