Georgia to Receive Settlement in Opioid Epidemic Case

The State of Georgia will receive a $16.7 million settlement from McKinsey for its role in the opioid epidemic.

On Thursday, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced that the State would receive money as part of a settlement with McKinsey & Company. The settlement is part of a larger, $573 million settlement that 47 US States, 5 US Territories, and the District of Columbia will all be receiving.

The coalition of States and Territories will be receiving a settlement after investigations into McKinsey for their role in working for opioid companies like Purdue Pharma.

The original complaint alleges that McKinsey advised Purdue Pharma on how to maximize profits from opioids, including encouraging physicians to prescribe more OxyContin to more patients and circumventing pharmacy restrictions on higher doses of opioids.

The money from the settlement will go to support services for Georgians suffering from opioid use disorder.

Over the last 20 years, 9,500 Georgians have died from an opioid overdose.
