Athens Police Confrontation with Armed Man Ends Peacefully

A confrontation between ACCPD officers and an armed man ended peacefully last week after police were able to deescalate the encounter. According to a release from the department, on Friday, March 5th, police were called regarding a suicidal man in the area of Pittard and Old Elberton Roads.

Officers located the injured man, who was carrying a gun. They called for assistance from a mental health Co-Responder Unit. In addition, members of the Strategic Response Team arrived with an armored rescue vehicle which allowed officers to get close enough to talk to the man, who put his weapon down and let emergency crews provide medical aid.

Police say he suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound but is expected to survive his injuries.
