COVID Update for Monday

COVID-19 hospitalizations remain high in the Athens Region.

In Region E, where Athens hospitals are at the center, there are 282 COVID-19 patients, that’s 43% of all patients in the region’s hospitals and the highest number since mid-January. Inpatient beds are at 89% capacity, ICU beds are at 99% capacity and 69% of ventilators are in use.

Piedmont Athens Regional is in ICU and medical diversion status, meaning these departments are unable to accept incoming ambulance traffic. The emergency department there is also seriously overcrowded, according to the Georgia Coordinating Center. St. Mary’s Hospital is in ICU diversion status.

These statuses can fluctuate throughout the day.

As for new COVID-19 cases today, 38 were reported in Athens-Clarke County, 65 were reported in Jackson County, and 15 in Oconee County, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.
