ACC Solicitor General, DA to Host Free Arrest Restriction Event

The Athens-Clarke County Solicitor General’s Office is partnering with the District Attorney’s Office to provide a virtual opportunity for residents to have some crimes restricted from the public. Will Fleenor is Chief Assistant Solicitor.

“And when it’s restricted, what that means is that people can’t see it,” Fleenor said. “So potential employers can’t see it, people who are reviewing some of the applications for housing or scholarships can’t see it.”

Individuals can still have access to their records, as can law enforcement agencies.

While the solicitor’s office focuses on misdemeanors, the DA’s office can offer relief for those with felony charges.

“This is the first time the District Attorney’s Office is fully participating in the event. The same things I’ve just been talking about with misdemeanor cases, they’ll be doing that with felony cases and then also, both misdemeanors and felonies that that office handled in Oconee County.”

Fleenor says most cases involve dismissal of charges, but some convictions can be restricted as well. There will also be advice available on sealing records, which provide yet another level of cover

The free event is Saturday, November 20, but those interested should sign up by October 29th at www.accgov.com/recordrestriction, or with paper forms.  Fleenor says his office can still offer some assistance to those who miss the deadline.
