UGA and BikeAthens publish digital map

Even with bike lanes and greenways, Clarke County has a long way to go toward better, safer cycling infrastructure. That was the idea behind a new digital map created by the University of Georgia Community Mapping Lab in partnership with local nonprofit BikeAthens.

Community input and online simulations helped inform the map, which categorizes color-coded roads from “strongly preferred” to “use only when necessary.” While comprehensive in-town, it also extends outside the loop to Winterville and dense neighborhoods in East Athens.

For now, the map is only accessible on the BikeAthens website.

Two cycling fatalities were reported this year across Clarke and Oconee County. While local government continues to support pedestrian and bicycle improvement projects, implementation is slow.
