Athens Sees All-Time Low Unemployment Rate

The Athens area unemployment rate was down to 1.9% at the end of November according to the Georgia Department of Labor—lower than October’s rate of 2.2%

The labor force—the number of both employed and unemployed citizens—has also decreased by 422 from the end of October to the end of November.

The number of unemployment insurance initial claims for the Athens area was also down to 188, 69 fewer than October.

For the Athens area, the Georgia Department of Labor includes Athens-Clarke, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties in their data.

The unemployment rate in the area has, on the whole, had a steady decrease throughout 2021. A similar trend is seen for the state of Georgia. The state reported a 2.8% unemployment rate for the end of November, down from 3.1% at the end of October.
