As the Omicron Variant of the Coronavirus surges in Clarke County, ACC Commissioners passed another emergency declaration at their meeting on Tuesday. This is the county's 25th passed declaration since the beginning of the pandemic nearly 3 years ago.

ACC District 3 Commissioner Melissa Link joins WUGA's Chris Shupe to talk about how the county is responding, how the vaccine mandate for government staff is going, and the year ahead.

Chris Shupe began work at WUGA as a part time weekend announcer in 2010. At the time Shupe was focused on maintaining a thriving career in Real Estate, as well as balancing his time as a local entertainer. Shupe may be best known as The Athens King, a tribute to Elvis Presley, which often included an 8 piece show band! In 2012, Shupe joined WUGA full time as the station’s Morning Edition Host and Assistant Operations Director, and after 2 years of serving in that role Shupe was hired as Program Director for the station. As PD, Shupe spearheaded a return to more involvement in national conferences and continuing education opportunities through industry professional organizations like the Public Radio Program Director's Association, Public Media Development and Marketing Association, Morning Edition Grad School, the NAB, and the Public Media Journalists Association. This involvement led Shupe to undertake a comprehensive market study in 2015, the first such examination of local audience trends in more than 15 years.
Robin Whetstone began as the Operations Assistant at WUGA in 2019, and moved into Production at the station in 2021. She loves using production, broadcasting, and digitaL technology to deliver stories that inform and entertain.

Robin is the Senior Producer of Athens News Matters, WUGA's weekly news and culture program, airing Wednesdays at 6pm, and hosts All Things Considered each weekday from 4-6:30pm.

A UGA MPH alumna, she also hosts and produces the Georgia Health Report, a weekly look at health policy and practice in Georgia and in our nation featuring Andy Miller, Southern Bureau Chief and Senior Editor of Kaiser Health News. (Multiple airings on WUGA and state-wide on Georgia Public Broadcasting.)

Robin has worked previously as a journalist, and most recently was a columnist for Flagpole Magazine. She started her career in Public Broadcasting at WPBT, Miami and Southeast Florida's Public Television station. When Robin's not at the station, you can find her wondering why this thing happened and what that person thinks.
