Baptist church to host local candidate forum tonight

Another forum brings Mayor and Commission candidates together ahead of the May 24 election.

Mayor and commission candidates will have another chance to publicly campaign at a forum hosted at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public and will be held at Abraham Mosley Fellowship Hall, and will also be streamed on Facebook live.

All attending candidates filled out the questionnaire prior to the event, describing their plans for youth development, policing, criminal justice and the SPLOST program, if elected. Those answers are public.

The forum is hosted in partnership with the Athens Community Agenda, an organization that “strives to engage diverse organizations in open dialogue,” according to social media channels.

This is the fourth candidate forum of this local election season. So far, there’s only been one forum -- hosted by the Athens-Area Chamber of Commerce -- where all candidates with opposition have been present. According to organizers of tonight’s event, Fred Moorman is the only mayoral candidate who has yet to RSVP. District 7 Commission candidate John Culpepper hasn't provided his questionnaire as of Tuesday afternoon, though organizers said they expect him to attend.

On May 2 at 6 p.m., Board of Education candidates will be invited to Mt. Pleasant for a forum dedicated to those local races.
