County commission meets tonight for regular voting session

accgov.com

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission will meet for their first voting session of the month at 6 p.m.

Athens-Clarke County police officials are asking Commissioners to approve over $2.75 million in federal grants. A vote is expected at the Mayor and Commission meeting tonight. The grants come from Congressionally Directed Spending, or “earmarks,” from the office of U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff.

Most of the money would allow ACCPD to purchase 36 electric vehicles and charging stations, while the rest would fund a new investigator position specializing in crimes committed against LGTBQ+ and elderly people. That funding, if received, would only support the new position for a year — local lawmakers would have to find an alternate way to pay for the investigator in the years after.

Commissioners are also expected to vote on a largely symbolic resolution calling on Congress and the White House to take stronger action to combat climate change.

Meetings are streamed online on the ACCGov YouTube page, and meeting agendas can be found at accgov.com/1688/Agendas.
